Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival
The day you've been waiting for! The flight is short aboard your wide-bodied jet. Relax with all the amenities of scheduled service, and soon land at San Juan International Airport. The warm breeze spells tropics.
Settle into your centrally-located hotel before rushing to the beach or heading downtown.
This is the land the native Taínos called "Borinquen," and the early explorers "The Isle of Enchantment." Seize the chance to discover why as you embrace in one glance the 21st-century resort and the 1521 Spanish settlement.
Overnight: San Juan
Day 2: Old San Juan Guided Walking Tour
Enjoy a guided walking tour in Old San Juan, the historic quarter founded in 1508 by the Spaniard Juan Ponce de Léon. Set on a narrow stretch of land, it's protected at both ends by forts: Castillo San Felipe del Morro, better known as El Morro, and Castillo San Cristóbal.
There are spectacular views from the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a fort begun in the 1530s to guard access to San Juan Bay. Stones gathered from ancient Taíno ceremonial centers were used to built its walls, up to 18 feet thick.
Enter the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, which is the second oldest cathedral on the American continents, and the resting place of the explorer Juan Ponce de León.
Visit the Iglesia de San José, which was founded by the Dominicans in 1532. The second oldest church in the New World, it stands as a Gothic gem from of the Old World, but is currently on the list of the Most Endangered Historic Places.
The Castillo San Cristóbal, built in the 17th century, is the largest fortified complex erected by the Spaniards in the New World. Visitors can see the spot where the first shots of the Spanish-American War were fired in 1898, as well as the Garita del Diablo, a sentry box from which, according to local lore, the devil would snatch away soldiers on night guard duty.
Overnight: San Juan
Day 3: Kayaking and Snorkeling Excursion to the Condado Lagoon and Escambrón Beach, San Juan
Experience both the fun and wonders of the tropics today!
Hone your paddling skills in the safe and calm environment of the Condado Lagoon. Go forward, backward, turn. Plan a race against your friends!
Plunge into the clear water of the San Juan Bay Estuary, whose lagoons and bays, mangroves and marshlands are part of the Condado Lagoon Natural Reserve. See aquatic plants, sea creatures, and coral reefs.
Consider a visit to the Museo de Las Américas, which focuses on the cultures and the history of the American continent, from Alaska to Patagonia.
You may want to make plans for scuba diving, snorkeling, windsurfing or deep-sea fishing (record-size marlins abound); all are popular activities available in the vicinity of San Juan.
Overnight: San Juan
Day 4: Excursion to El Yunque Rainforest and Luquillo Beach
Set out for the U.S. National Forest system's only rainforest, El Yunque, which is located on the eastern side of the island. Showers may be frequent but they are brief. The park's 28,000 acres harbor 240 indigenous species of trees, giant ferns, vines and orchids. Visitors are sure to see hundreds of tropical birds and hear the peeping of the ubiquitous national symbol, a tiny, green tree frog called el coquí.
Visit the El Portal Rainforest Center to view its exhibits and learn about the forest's history and topography, as well as its animal and plant life.
A long crescent of warm sand shaded by coconut groves and a pristine lagoon protected by coral reefs make up Puerto Rico's most popular beach. Enjoy Playa Luquillo's Caribbean flavor while snacking on some empañadillas or sipping fresh coconut milk!
Overnight: San Juan
Day 5: San Juan, Optional Excursion to the Camuy Caves
Plan your free time or consider an optional excursion.
On an excursion today, you'll visit the Río Camuy Cave Park. The world's second-longest underground river flows there through deep limestone caverns and in a chasm filled with tropical flora and fauna.
"Availability depends on rainfall during the season"Overnight: San Juan
